Cottage
Ave.
Founded
in 2000, Cottage Avenue Community is an innovative transitional
housing program designed to help families make the transition
from emergency shelters to permanent housing and self-sufficiency.
Many of the families that come to Cottage Avenue have
one or more challenges in areas such as employment,
education, substance abuse, or physical and mental health
that prevent them from achieving independence on their
own.
This
unique housing community of renovated single-family
row houses is located in a one-block area in southern
Park Heights. A neighbor-hood setting helps the 15 resident
families to feel a part of the community and to develop
supportive relationships with other families nearby.
To assist participants in reaching their goals, Cottage
Avenue Community families have access to the nearby
services of St. Vincent de Paul's St. Ambrose including:
adult literacy, career development, food pantry, Head
Start, and after-school and summer programs for children
and teens. A focal point for the revitalization of the
community includes a new playground adjacent to the
Cottage Avenue houses.
