Volunteer by Program: Cottage Avenue Community

Volunteer opportunities are available at nearby St. Ambrose center. Opportunities include:

Administrative Assistance:

  • St. Ambrose Center needs volunteers to help with administrative tasks such as answering phones, staffing reception desk, and shredding and filing documents.
  • Volunteer times are flexible, but must be during St. Ambrose Center hours, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm.

Adult and Young Adult Education:

  • St. Ambrose has adopted a Learn to Earn literacy model that focuses on helping adults gain the necessary skills to meet their individual goals. The program has two levels: Pre-GED, and GED preparation.
  • One-on-one tutors are needed. Volunteers must have high school diploma or equivalency, but previous experience is not required.
  • Classes meet 9:30am -1:00pm from Monday to Thursday, and 6:30pm-9:00pm Monday and Wednesday.

Career Development:

  • The Career Development Program helps both unemployed and employed individuals find and retain jobs.
  • Volunteers can serve as resume and application coaches, helping with follow-up, and/or with facilitating workshops.
  • Volunteer times are flexible, but must be during St. Ambrose Center hours, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm.

Computer Education:

  • The Computer Instruction Program to assist individuals to become computer literate.
  • Volunteers can work as lab supervisors or computer literacy tutors.
  • Volunteer times are flexible, but must be during St. Ambrose Center hours, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm.

Driver:

  • The Saint Ambrose Center needs volunteers to drive our van to the surrounding churches to pick up donations for our pantry.
  • Volunteers must have a clean driving record, be reliable, and able to lift heavy boxes and bags.
  • Pick-ups are scheduled on Monday mornings.

Gardening:

  • The Saint Ambrose Community Garden needs volunteers to work individually and with community members to organize and maintain our vegetable and flower beds.
  • Volunteer times are flexible to fit volunteer schedule. Previous experience is not required.

Housekeeping and Maintenance Assistance:

  • The Saint Ambrose Center is in need of volunteers to help with light housekeeping and/or minor maintenance tasks.
  • Volunteer will work with the volunteer coordinator to determine how his or her interests and skills can best be applied to the Center’s needs.

Meal Program:

  • The Meal Program works in conjunction with the Culinary Program to provide a hot and nutritious meal to anyone who is hungry.
  • Volunteers can buss tables or distribute and collect meal tickets.
  • Volunteers may come in on a regular basis or by appointment. The meal is served three days a week from 11:30-1:00.

Youth Mentoring/Tutoring:

  • St. Ambrose Youth Place seeks to increase academic performance and strengthen participants' commitment to education.
  • Volunteers help students with homework and other educational and recreational opportunities.
  • The afterschool program runs from 3:00pm to 6:00pm Monday through Friday. The minimum commitment is one hour weekly for ten consecutive weeks.
