I appreciate that Beans & Bread helped me get back on my feet. If you come to them with a problem, they will do everything in their power to help you, they truly will.

Bernard’s STORY

A spirit of gratitude.

Bernard’s struggle with housing insecurity began when he lost his welding job after 35 years due to vision loss. He found it difficult to find trustworthy people and support until he came to Beans & Bread. “I love the people here. They helped me get off the street. That was a blessing.”

At Beans & Bread, Bernard completed a housing assessment and was matched through coordinated access. He was placed in Time Organization’s ARPA Rapid Rehousing Program, which provides short-term rental assistance with the goal of ensuring long-term housing stability. It also provides case management services, BGE payment assistance, and a furniture stipend. Bernard said the program was a perfect fit. “I’m happy now, and I haven’t even been inside my new home yet. Wherever you put me, I can adapt.”

Bernard’s case manager helped him get an appointment with an eye specialist, and his next goal is cataract surgery. Although Bernard is focused on his future, he will continue to visit the people who helped him at Beans & Bread. “I will never forget where I came from. I’m stronger now.”
